Cakes and literary references

Today's my birthday and this is the cake that Michelle McGrane has made to celebrate it. I'm beyond touched.

(And if you don't pick up the literary reference, click here. You know the next step.)

Hello, I've just read and enjoyed very much Any Human Face (my review will be submitted to Euro Crime soon) - but I do not get the scooter on the cover as there are no scooters in the book. Am I being really stupid and unliterary? It would be good to know as I was thinking of mentioning this in my review (inappropriate cover) but if I am being dense I will leave it out!
best wishes
Maxine.

You're absolutely right, Maxine, there isn't a single scooter in the novel, let alone a beautiful pale blue Vespa. I'm afraid my comment about 'literary reference' is a bit misleading, but I was referring to the cover and not the actual words inside! I must admit, though, that I love the picture on the cover and think it captures the mood of the book perfectly, despite the scooter-free text... It's surprisingly hard to find an image that catches the eye and represents some element of the novel - I think we have to give publishers a little leeway!

I'm so glad you like the novel, and I look forward to seeing what you have to say about it

Thanks, Charles. I agree it is a very nice scooter and cover ;-) . I am glad my memory (never the best) isn't quite as bad as all that.

I think you are a very talented writer, the book is excellent. (And I read a great deal of intelligent crime fiction, ie no serial killer/slasher/tortury stuff such as you see in the "bestseller" lists).

BTW, I think we share a mutual friend in Clare Dudman? Small world, the internet.

Yes, Clare and I missed meeting each other when we both invited to a book-lovers' holiday in Spain last year (www.7daywonder.com - check them out!), and then again while I was in the UK, but we've exchanged emails and I'm a great admirer of her work. In fact, I'm waiting for a copy of Wegener's Jigsaw to land on my welcome mat any day now...

Thank you for the kind words... I'm now looking forward even more to seeing your review!
